Giving a sympathy gift to people who have lost a loved one.?

A close friend lost his mother to cancer. In addition to the monetary gift we are giving to her favorite charities, I would like to give him and his sister a basket of goodies, cookies, banana bread that sort of stuff. When and how is it appropriate to give them this gift? Also, do you take the sympathy card to the funeral or should we mail it?
